This is part 2 of our post on Hong Kong Toy Shopping.
Our next stop after Komodo Kidz in Wong Chuk Hang was Tai Yuen Street in Wan Chai (Hong Kong Island). This is referred to as the toy street of Hong Kong. It's not exactly an entire street of toy stores as the name suggests, but there's definitely more than enough toy stores here.
Getting to Tai Yuen is very easy. Via MTR, just get off at the Wan Chai station, take the A3 exit and walk towards Johnston Road. Tai Yuen intersects Johnston Road, just a couple of minutes walk from the MTR station. The first few stores to the left and right, coming from Johnston Road, are all toy stores.
The shops sell all kinds of toys, from cheap plastic toys, to Gashapon collections, to hard-to-find collectibles, to party supplies, to LEGOs, to TOMY toys and practically anything else you might be looking for. Prices are pretty good (most are fixed prices but you can always try to bargain), cheaper than Toys R' Us or any large commercial toy stores. If you're looking specifically for LEGO sets though, check out Part 3 of our Hong Kong Toy Shopping series where we'll tell you where to find even cheaper LEGO sets and minifigs.
There were around 6 to 8 toy shops total, 3 on each side, then the rest of the road had shops selling all kinds of other stuff like clothes, electronics and other supplies. Street vendors were also all around selling most of the usual stuff in Hong Kong.
We perused each of the toy stores and found a whole lot of interesting stuff. You can spend several hours here and you'll enjoy even just looking around. Even without a shopping list, you'll surely find a few things you'll end up buying.
We managed to snag some Tomy Plarail train tracks, some Tomica die-cast cars, and a few anime collectibles.
